African Relish Cottages

Welcoming Karoo cottages for the chef in your soul

African Relish Cottages

African Relish is a recreational cooking school offering comfortable accommodation in four charming cottages dotted around the historic Karoo town of Prince Albert. Weekend and longer courses are available, as are retreats that are perfect for book clubs and yoga devotees. Designed with privacy in mind, each cottage is self-catering with a well-equipped kitchen. At the cooking school, you can learn to cook splendid dishes under the guidance of well-known chefs, then spend some time enjoying the hiking trails, historical walks, monuments and museums in the area.

The hotel

The main cookery school, with its kitchen, classroom, dining area and lounge, is located in a part 19th-century/part modern Karoo-style building with large windows looking out to succulent beds and a green garden (there is also an olive grove and vegetable garden). The decor is simple, and the central kitchen (equipped with every culinary need) opens on to a private veranda and outdoor braai area. The dining area has a wood-burning stove and the lounge has comfy seating.

The rooms

Each of the four cottages offers simple but comfortable accommodation with air conditioning, lounge with fireplace, fully equipped kitchen, veranda with braai, a well-appointed bathroom and king-sized or twin beds. All four cottages are located in the town.

Experiences

The main focus of African Relish is its cooking school, which runs short 'anytime' courses as well as set 'scheduled' courses throughout the year. Hosted by professional chefs, classes range from breadmaking and Karoo classics to Italian dishes. There are loads of other activities in the area, from cycling, hiking, evening ghost walks, star walks and museum visits to olive oil tasting, fig farm tours and cheese tasting.
