Azura Quilalea

Indian Ocean luxury at its best

Azura Quilalea

If you’re looking for a truly luxurious Quirimbas Archipelago experience then look no further. This tastefully decorated lodge has managed to blur the lines between opulence and barefoot luxury. It’s no wonder they were voted Mozambique's Leading Luxury Hotel Villa at the World Travel Awards in 2015. Although you’re on a remote desert island off Africa, do hide your surprise when you’re suddenly rubbing shoulders with some celebrity clientele at the bar.

At the lodge

The hotel

We love the lounge area with its sunken seating, exotic throw pillows and arched windows - a throwback to the area's history as an ancient arabic trade route. There’s a bar and communal swimming pool outside with bean bags, loungers and white parasols. Enjoy a crisp Sauvignon from the bar on on the beach, enjoy private dining in the cool wine cellar or indulge in the a la carte offerings at the restaurant producing refined and elegant plates of food.

The rooms

The nine seafront villas offer rustic-chic accommodation of Conde Nast Traveller Magazine proportions. You won’t be disappointed, it’s impossible. You walk straight off the beach and onto the deck of your private stone villa topped with palm-thatch. The kingsize four poster beds, french doors, earth tones and outdoor shower compliment the tropical island ambiance and the 24 hour room service is a nice touch. Also to be found is a mini bar, air conditioning and tea and coffee making facilities. For extra special occassions book the exclusive cliff top Villa Quilalea. It’s plunge pool merges seamlessly with the watery blue horizon and the enormous stone bath beyond enticing.

Experiences

Lovers of the sun and sea will feel at home in this marine sanctuary. You can scuba dive and snorkel off the beach, there is a mangrove forest in the interior of the island, which is ideal for a kayaking trip where you can marvel at the birds above and the languid fish below. There are humpback whales from July to November and when they move off the nesting turtles move in. Paradise not only for us humans but for our animal friends too. For more laid back activities book a spa treatment, enjoy an exclusive picnic experience, a candle-lit beach dinner or a cruise on a traditional Mozambican dhow.
