Erongo Wilderness Lodge

This mountain outpost offers hiking, scenery and tranquility in abundance

Erongo Wilderness Lodge

Leave your car at the bottom and enjoy the steep drive up the rock kopje in the lodges' specially adapted 4x4. Perched up high in the Erongo Mountains, 2.5 hours' drive from Windhoek, the lodge fits snugly amidst the granite boulders that make up this remote, nature lover's paradise. The scenery resembles that of Americas' Wild West, the wildlife is uniquely Namibian; rock dassie, kudu, porcupine and zebra, among others. Hikers, rock art enthusiasts, birders and stargazers will be in heaven, quite literally at this altitude!

The hotel

The main stone and thatched building sits on its own hill. Meals are enjoyed al fresco whenever possible, which is often in this arid part of the world, and why not with those views? Inside there's an open plan dining room, filled with candles at night, a log fire, a library area and comfy sofas. An outdoor pool, beautifully carved into the rocks, sits alongside a grass lawn with loungers, and a protruding sundowner deck.

The rooms

Ten tented, thatched roof and canvas sides, chalets are raised on stilts and linked by wooden walkways. The bathrooms, built around existing rocks and trees, are all different in style but each comes with shower, flush loo and organic bath products. From the private deck out front, and throughout the chalet interior, you feel connected to the surrounding mountains. Honeymooners should request Room 6, being furthest from the main areas, it also has a double bed and private rock pool.

Experiences

With a lovely selection of short 1-2 hour walks, and more strenuous options, available from the lodge, walking is the big draw for most guests. They also offer game drives on the conservancy, which inevitably include a fantastic sundowner spot - there are plenty at Erongo! Days trips to the local town, Omaruru, can be arranged. If you can extend to 3 nights, you will no doubt succumb to the timelessness of the area, and relaxing becomes the main activity.
