Kalahari Plains Camp
Star-studded skies and breath-taking landscapes
Kalahari Plains Camp
This simple but upmarket, solar-powered camp is located on the edge of a huge pan, in the Kalahari Desert, in central Botswana. Set amidst striking landscapes, Kalahari Plains is perfectly positioned (off the beaten track) to make the most of them. Offering exceptional summer wildlife viewing, it is best known for its legendary black-maned lions and for having one of the highest concentrations of cheetah in southern Africa. Add to that hundreds of plains game and awe-inspiring star gazing, and you have yourself a rather unique safari.
At the lodge
The camp is as environmentally friendly as possible. With an abundance of sun and a scarcity of water, the camp is 100% solar powered and uses ancient but effective water harvesting techniques. Wood is also scarce, resulting in the campfire not being lit every night. The camp has a dining area with views out onto the separate pool deck and the pan, a small reference library, and a curio shop that stocks items made by the local community. The bar has a great star-gazing deck above it. Go on - grab a drink, look up and feel small.
The camp consists of nine raised en-suite timber and canvas units, with large windows to make the most of the vistas. Two are for families, with an extra en-suite room that sleeps two. Each unit is furnished with an air of comfortable simplicity. Innovative insulated canvas walls, mesh windows and a ceiling fan keep things relatively cool. Although the coolest features by far are the units’ private outdoor star beds from which to appreciate the true beauty of the clear night skies.
Activities include twice-daily game drives or full-day excursions, interpretive “Bushman Walks,” and cultural tours with the local people who are descendants of the ancient Bushman clans of the area. The tours and walks reveal fascinating insights into their traditional lifestyles and intimate knowledge of the desert. The Bushmen are known for their knowledge of the stars, and the guides make the most of the incredibly starry skies by dabbling in a bit of astronomy, much to the delight and entertainment of guests.
