Legendary Arusha Lodge

Colonial splendour on a coffee plantation guarded by Mount Meru

Legendary Arusha Lodge

We guarantee the words "Out of Africa" will pop into your head as you enter Legendary Lodge Arusha, a luxury destination that's popular with visitors beginning or ending their Tanzanian odyssey. Its one fault, most say, is that they wished they'd booked a longer stay. And they have a point. The lodge combines colonial heritage with lush gardens (and a beautiful frangipani tree at the entrance) in the heart of a working coffee farm, and is the perfect place to unwind. Just minutes from Arusha and the nearest airport, you'll be pampered with excellent accommodation, intuitive service and fabulous food.

The hotel

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the gracious old farmhouse, or on the covered main patio overlooking the manicured lawn, with the croquet set at the ready. There's a comfortable guest lounge. Aching muscles after your Kili climb? Visit the spa for a soothing massage.

The rooms

Accommodation is in 10 stylish suites and two garden cottages. Cleverly designed with a fusion of African arts and crafts and old, colonial-style luxury, the cottages offer king-sized beds, a separate lounge with fireplace and an en-suite bathroom with shower and a deep tub. The two-bedroom Kahawa Cottage is ideal for families; and two cosy rooms with en-suite bathrooms are available in The Old Farmhouse for those who prefer to be closer to the dining room and guest lounge.

Experiences

Take a mountain-bike excursion through the plantation, or explore the working farm on an organised tour. Visit the nearby recreation centre to use the swimming pool, tennis or squash courts and fitness centre. If you're keen to explore further afield, the staff will arrange excursions to Arusha, nearby Arusha National Park and Ngurdoto Crater. Or grab a book and a cup of coffee and sit quietly in the garden. Life couldn't be more relaxing.
