Makanyane Safari Lodge

Exquisite luxury lodge in the wildlife-rich Madikwe Private Game Reserve

Makanyane Safari Lodge

This small safari lodge is situated in an exclusive concession of the vast Madikwe Private Game Reserve, which spans a staggering 75,000 hectares in the remote northern reaches of South Africa. The reserve is known for its rugged scenery, permanent waterways and pockets of lush indigenous forests, with open plains and a truly isolated wilderness feel. Makanyane Safari Lodge lies on the banks of the Marico River, and this beautiful bush retreat has a natural feeling of laid-back luxury, with clever eco-friendly designs that make the most of its wild riverine setting.

At the lodge

The hotel

The elegant main lodge, sheltered by a dense canopy of trees, follows the edge of a ravine, with views of the waterhole below. Its eco-friendly design features high thatched ceilings, intricate stonework walls and ancient leadwood trees, with an open-fronted layout giving a sense of space. A vast lounge and dining area with two open fireplaces leads to the deck and heated infinity pool. There’s a library, a safari shop, a well-stocked wine cellar, and a spa and air-conditioned gym.

The rooms

Eight spacious glass-fronted suites tucked into the lush woodland offer views of the tranquil Marico River. Each air-conditioned suite has a private sundeck, outside lounge, en-suite bathroom and a beautiful outdoor rock shower. The furnishings are classic safari style, with natural textures and expanses of glass walls and fold-back windows encouraging you to feel totally immersed in the wilderness. A secluded bush hide with a raised sleeping deck offers the exciting option of spending a night out under the stars.

Experiences

Early morning, afternoon and night drives offer the opportunity for some exciting wildlife encounters. All of the larger species are found in good numbers, including the Big Five, cheetah and packs of rare and beautiful "painted" African wild dogs. Guided bush walks are a great way to experience the smaller creatures and for birdwatching – Madikwe has some 300 recorded species. Work out in the gym, relax beside the pool, or enjoy a spa treatment between game-viewing activities.

Wildlife

Madikwe Game Reserve lies on a transition zone with a mix of Kalahari thornveld, denser bushveld and open savannah areas providing the perfect habitat for an abundance of species including the famed Big Five, with both black and white rhino present. The not-to-be-missed wildlife specials for this region include brown hyena, sable antelope and gemsbok. However, the real highlight for Madikwe is its resident pack of wild dogs, providing exciting moments on the hunt.
