Mala Mala Rattray's
Refined inside, wild beyond
Mala Mala Rattray's
Mala Mala Private Game Reserve is sandwiched between two of South Africa's most revered big game protected areas—the Kruger National Park and the Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve. There may be borders, but they are influenced and wildlife is able to roam freely between these Big Five hotspots. At Rattray's on Mala Mala, the wilderness meets a sense of refinement at this old and beautiful lodge. The colonial-themed lodge nods to the days of the early explorers in Africa. It has the feel, comfort and structure of a hotel, but the views and wildlife of one of the top safari lodges in Africa.
At the lodge
The hotel
A small dining room allows for intimate dinners. Elephant tusks on the walls remind of you of your place in Africa while the bar has photographs from the early days of this area and its pioneers. The large wooden deck is both a great outdoor location for meals, and the perfect opportunity to view wildlife from stationary comfort. The infinity pool looks out over the river. The library boasts rare African books and magnificent works of art.
The rooms
With only eight luxury suites, the lodge is never crowded. Each "khaya" (Zulu for home) is large enough to be an apartment, with the bonus of not having to cook or clean. A strict rule never allows for more than two guests per room. A private veranda has views over the river and connects to a heated plunge pool. The bath has his and hers basins, a ball and claw footed bath and a secluded outdoor shower.

Experiences
Morning and afternoon game drives are the highlights of visiting Mala Mala Rattrays. Only four guests are allowed on any safari vehicle, giving guests the chance to sit close to the ranger and learn all about the Big Five, plains game and birds spotted. Bush walks are also available on request. Massages can be arranged and are done in the privacy of the khayas.
