Referred to as the ‘place of plenty,’ this luxurious, famous tented camp is situated on Chief’s Island, within the Moremi reserve, in northern Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Mombo, big sister to Little Mombo, is renowned for its extremely dense concentrations of plains game and predators - regarded as some of the best big game viewing in all of Africa. Its accolades don’t stop there - it is also eco-friendly, solar-powered and involved in a number of conservation projects, including the reintroduction of the black and white rhino. This camp boasts rave reviews and is admired by guests and guides alike.
At the lodge
The thatched main area boasts all the usual facilities, as well as two plunge pools and a nice added extra in the form of a gym. Stretched out along the water’s edge, it provides views from every corner of its relaxing setup. It possesses an opulent and vibrant African style with wooden floors, chandeliers and locally-inspired sculptures. Dark heavy woods contrast well with large, comfy sofas in neutral fabrics. The raised wooden deck overlooking the floodplains makes for a memorable dining area.
Elevated and built below shady trees, the camp consists of nine palatial en-suite tents. The word tent however does not do the level of style and comfort justice. Each humble abode boasts a king-sized bed with a mosquito net, multiple ceiling fans, a writing desk, a large soft sofa, indoor and outdoor showers, as well as a private deck with a daybed. Mombo offers the perfect balance between luxury and authenticity, the environment remaining centre stage.
Activities are restricted to daytime game drives - hardly a restriction with an almost guaranteed sighting of lions, incredible guiding and safari vehicles with heated seats. Private bush meals under the stars and sundowner picnics are also up for grabs. Enjoy a rhino conservation talk from the specialists on the ground or take a break and get a spa treatment. A dip in the pool is always a good idea, as is reclining on a lounger or daybed with your binoculars, scanning for animals.
