A secluded wilderness gem
You'll know of the Thornybush Private Game Reserve for its incredible wildlife, but you might not have known that this particular lodge also looks out onto South Africa's Drakensberg Mountains. Set on the crest of a hill, the beautiful lodge is both elevated and shaded. The camp manages to balance earthiness and simplicity, while still being one of the most exclusive lodges in the area. Its exclusivity isn't found in expensive beds and overpriced activities, but in the small amount of people staying at n'Kaya at any given time. It's where you'll find yourself convinced you're the only ones here.
At the lodge
Although the dining room is always available for meals, they are best enjoyed further afield. Morning game drives are coupled with pastries and coffee and dinners are served out under the stars. Hot African afternoons are characterised with pool lazing or sipping cocktails at the outdoor pub. Guests gather around the open-hearth fireplace after evening safaris to share exciting stories. The enormous fireplace is the focal point in the lounge.
The eight exclusive rooms each have a spacious en suite bathroom and couples looking for privacy will be happy here. Yet the rooms are really made to be transformed into four double suites, each with a private lounge area for relaxing away from other guests.
The first and best activity to do every day, and twice daily if possible, is to join a game drive in one of the open-sided Land Rovers. Guests can simply sit back and watch as rangers take them to the areas best known for spotting animals and birds. Tailor-made walking safaris can also be arranged and will bring guests closer to the details of the bush - like paw prints and claw scratches.
