Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel

(This property is closed due to a fire. There are no plans to rebuild at present)
Ras Nungwi is perched on the northernmost tip of the east coast of Zanzibar, with a wonderfully secluded beach, an excellent coral reef for diving and snorkelling as well as some fantastic game fishing. Majestic whale sharks and playful dolphins are a common sight along the shores, making one feel as if the world begins and ends in this patch of paradise.

At the lodge

The hotel

The lodge has made use of ancient local building traditions and natural materials to create a contemporary architectural space. Open-air structures under makuti-thatched roofs create a light and airy feel with wide-open views across the Indian Ocean. The main beach area allows easy access to the large swimming pool, beach bar and watersports centre. The beach itself is almost completely unpopulated and is superb for swimming, walking and a variety of marine activities.

The rooms

Ras Nungwi has a range of thatched chalets or lodge rooms, each with a private balcony and en-suite bathroom. All 32 rooms have air conditioning and ceiling fans, with comfortable four-poster beds beautifully crafted from hardwood and draped with billowing mosquito nets. The Ocean Suite is a spacious detached villa with its own plunge pool and tropical garden area. There is a great roof terrace for private dinners or stargazing.

Experiences

The watersports centre offers access to some of Africa's best big-game fishing sites as well as scuba diving, snorkelling, kayaking and parasailing gear. Traditional dhow cruises go hand in hand with a stay on Zanzibar, so climb aboard to watch the sun set or simply while away the day gazing at the island. In the hotel's tropical gardens is Peponi Spa, which offers an enticing range of holistic treatments to chill your mind, body and spirit, should you still be stressed.
