Tau Pan Camp
Recognised for its stark beauty and remoteness.
Tau Pan Camp
Tau Pan is a simple but comfortable camp perched on the ridge of an ancient sand dune, giving it wonderful views over the limitless plains of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. The Kalahari is known as a thirstland because for much of the year there is very little standing water – Tau Pan, however, is built beside a permanent waterhole. The camp has been constructed with the environment in mind, utilising only solar power to generate electricity, pumping water from deep beneath the desert and treating waste water before returning it to the ground.
At the lodge
The central area is where guests come together for meals and to watch extraordinary sunsets with a well-deserved sundowner in hand. From the lodge's expanse of elevated decking, the views are endless, and there's always the chance you'll spot game and birds from the the camp. In addition, there is a small swimming pool which is an essential diversion during the heat of the day.
Tau Pan Camp has just eight rooms, each tastefully furnished and built on a wooden deck and with a cool thatch roof. There is also a family suite to provide more space for those visiting with children. The rooms are light and spacious, with en-suite bathrooms with twin handbasins and an outdoor shower, and a deck with comfy chairs from which to enjoy the gorgeous views of the surrounding pans.
Activities here include game drives with an expert guide and a tracker team who are renowned for finding cheetah. Birders will be delighted to learn that Central Kalahari Game Reserve has a reputation for being one of the best destinations for raptor spotting. Take nature walks with local Bushmen to learn about their lifestyle and ancient culture and, after dinner, enjoy the night sky with a guide who will interpret the network of stars above.
