With its vast and varied landscapes, incredible scope of activities and sheer number of places to visit and things to do, Tanzania<\/a> is often described as Africa in a nutshell \u2013 and we certainly wouldn\u2019t argue with that. It\u2019s a great country to visit for an iconic safari experience (game drives, the Great Migration and G&Ts around the campfire, we\u2019re looking at you) but it\u2019s also an excellent choice if you\u2019re after something a little more unusual. From on-foot explorations in the wildest of locations to idyllic escapes to the coast, there\u2019s no limit to the options on offer in Tanzania.<\/p>\n

So, without further ado, here are our picks for the best things to do in Tanzania \u2013 how many can you add to your trip?!<\/p>\n

Watch the Great Migration in the Serengeti<\/h2>\n

First on our list of things to do in Tanzania is a spectacle that the country is most famous for in the safari stakes, and one that we definitely couldn\u2019t ignore! Watching the wildebeest of the Great Migration<\/a> as they thunder across the Serengeti<\/a> plains is a bucket-list experience for many and quite rightly so \u2013 it\u2019s magical, mesmerising and one of the natural world\u2019s most magnificent displays by far. P.S. seeing it all from the basket of a hot air balloon is truly breathtaking.<\/p>\n

What many don\u2019t realise is that whatever time of year you travel, it\u2019s possible to see the wildebeest. The river crossings<\/a> are the most iconic event, and they happen in the northern Serengeti, between roughly July and September. But visit from January to March to see the new babies being born in the south<\/a>, or head to Grumeti in the west in May or June to catch the rutting season<\/a> in full swing.<\/p>\n

Try a walking safari<\/h2>\n

In the sprawling and epic Tanzania, things to do are in no short supply, but may we recommend a walking safari? Perfect for thrill seekers (and equally as good if you\u2019re simply looking to do something a little bit different), a walking safari takes you right out of the comfort zone of a 4×4 and heightens all your senses. With no doors to hide behind, it\u2019s just you, the wilderness, and the wildlife – the sensation of walking through the bush on your own two feet is thrilling. Safety is of course paramount, and the guides in Tanzania are some of the best in the business \u2013 specially trained, they know the landscapes better than anyone and will take you to all the hidden corners and most secret of spots in pursuit of the wildlife. Walking isn\u2019t possible everywhere in Tanzania so you\u2019ll need to choose your lodges carefully. A walking safari in Tarangire<\/a> is a good place to start – the terrain is gentle and the wildlife trusting \u2013 whilst the Selous<\/a> offers something a bit wilder. Try Oliver\u2019s Camp<\/a> in the former and Roho ya Selous<\/a> in the latter. And then there\u2019s Ruaha<\/a>. The park is our top spot for walking<\/a> in Tanzania, and Kichaka Expeditions<\/a> our number one go-to.<\/p>\n

Go chimp trekking<\/h2>\n

It might be one of the continent\u2019s most iconic safari destinations, but there are also several alternative things to do in Tanzania<\/a> in between game drives \u2013 you just need to know where to find them. A good place to start is the enchanting Mahale Mountains<\/a> in the west of the country. The forested slopes are home to the world\u2019s largest known population of wild chimpanzee and to watch them in their natural habitat is a sight to behold. Treks<\/a> usually take place in the mornings and you\u2019ll scramble through the leafy Nirvana, past shy bushbuck and exotic birds, until you reach the chimps and spend a privileged hour in their company. More recently, the wild chimp population on Rubondo Island<\/a> has been habituated to human presence and offers an excellent (and slightly easier to reach!) option for chimp trekking.<\/p>\n

Greystoke Mahale <\/a>in the Mahale Mountains has to be one of the most fabulous lodges on the continent. The six cabins overlook the cool waters of Lake Tanganyika and the winged main area is the perfect spot to admire your fairytale surroundings. On Rubondo Island, Rubondo Island Camp<\/a> is really your only option \u2013 but it\u2019s a damn good one at that.<\/p>\n

Sleep under the stars<\/h2>\n

Established by hunters and trackers back in the day, fly camping takes its name from the \u2018fly\u2019 sheet of canvas that the early explorers would sleep under. Today, things have got a tad more luxurious (think feather-soft duvets, hot showers and bacon and eggs for brekkie in some cases) but it\u2019s still an excellent way to get back to basics and enjoy the bush for what it really is. Traditionally, you\u2019ll start your adventure with a walking safari, just as the sun is beginning to set, and arrive at your fly camp in time for dinner. Then, you\u2019ll retreat to your mosquito net for an incredible night beneath the stars, accompanied only by the murmur of voices around the fire and the finest of lines between you and the great wilderness\u2026.<\/p>\n

Fly camping can be done both in the Selous<\/a> (Sand Rivers Camp<\/a> would be our favourite here) and also from Chada<\/a> in Katavi<\/a> in the far west of the country. It\u2019s more unusual in the Serengeti<\/a>, but there are some camps that offer the experience \u2013 check out Serian Lamai<\/a> who also offer multi-day fly camping expeditions, as well as one night adventures. It certainly makes the cut for one of the best things to do in Tanzania.<\/p>\n

Head to the Tanzania coast<\/h2>\n

When it comes to the best things to do in Tanzania, the beach might not immediately spring to mind \u2013 but venture to the ocean you should, for the coastline is the stuff dreams are made of. On the mainland, you\u2019ve got Ras Kutani<\/a>, a slice of paradise on the deserted shores of the Indian Ocean where hammock-lounging is probably the most challenging activity you\u2019ll encounter. Then there are the famous islands<\/a>; try Zanzibar<\/a> for a heady blend of culture and luxe beach resorts (and a blissful dhow cruise at sunset<\/a>), Mafia Island<\/a> for diving and snorkelling<\/a> and Pemba<\/a> if you just want to get away from it all. The gateway to the coast is Dar es Salaam<\/a>, the capital city that\u2019s a mere hop, skip and a jump from the safari parks of the northern circuit and even better connected with the parks of the south. What better excuse to indulge in some beachside R&R?<\/p>\n

Accommodation-wise, there are options to suit everyone in all four locations whether you\u2019re looking for all out glamour, beach butlers and spa treatments included, or something a little more relaxed. A couple of our top spots include Baraza Resort & Spa<\/a> and the fabulous under-water Manta Resort.<\/a><\/p>\n

Walk through the Ngorongoro Highlands<\/h2>\n

The Ngorongoro Crater<\/a> should certainly be on any list of what to see in Tanzania, but one of our favourite experiences in the area is to lace up your walking boots and explore on two feet. The Crater Highlands that surround the iconic, animal-filled crater are a magical melee of jungled woodland, tumbling waterfalls and small, Maasai villages and a walk or hike<\/a> through the forest will reward you with plenty of sightings and some rather lovely views too. Or, take things one step further and hike from Ngorongoro all the way to the shores of centuries-old Lake Natron<\/a>. The three-day expedition<\/a> begins at Empakaai, the forgotten crater, and will take you through hauntingly beautiful landscapes, down dusty gorges and up rugged mountains, bringing a whole new meaning to \u2018off the beaten track.\u2019<\/p>\n

Tented camp Entamanu<\/a> offers lovely walks along the crater rim, and from The Highlands Camp<\/a>, you can hike in Empakaai Crater and the even lesser-known (and just as beautiful) Olmoti with a Maasai guide. If you fancy doing the Lake Natron trek<\/a>, add a few nights at either of the two first to ease yourself into the walking \u2013 and enjoy a spot of luxury too.<\/p>\n

Climb Mount Kilimanjaro<\/h2>\n

Undoubtedly one of the most unique things to do in Tanzania, making the climb to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro is an experience that will remain with you forever. Standing at a lofty 5,895 metres-above-sea-level, Mount Kili is both the tallest peak in Africa and the highest free-standing \u2018mountain\u2019 in the world.<\/p>\n

Despite being one of the Seven Summits, the trek to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro doesn\u2019t require any technical climbing skills or specialised equipment, but you do need to prepare thoroughly for the climb. It can take anywhere between five and nine days to complete the summit and, in general, the best time to do so is during one of the two dry seasons (July to October and December to mid-March). Depending on the route you choose, you\u2019ll either camp or spend the night in a permanent settlement. You\u2019ll rise early each morning and set off, navigating your way through incredible flora and other-worldly scenery, and end each day with a hearty meal beside the fire.<\/p>\n

Sitting in northeast Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro\u2019s ethereal figure can be seen from miles around and if you\u2019re not up for the climb, you could just take in the view from areas like Amboseli and Chyulu Hills \u2013 this is the place to go for the ultimate vantage point.<\/p>\n

Go on a photography safari<\/h2>\n

Whether you\u2019re already a pro or a budding shutterbug, a photography safari is one of the top things to do in Tanzania<\/a>. Trundling across the neverending plains or through mysterious forests, poised to capture that perfect shot is a marvellous way to experience all that Tanzania has to offer.<\/p>\n

Visit a working coffee farm<\/h2>\n

If you\u2019re looking for things to do in Tanzania<\/a>, other than safari-ing, of course, taking a peaceful and informative stroll around a working coffee farm is a top option. In Arusha and surrounding areas, you\u2019ll have the chance to join a local guide on a walkabout through the coffee plants, learning all about the life cycle of a coffee bean, how they\u2019re grown and the process of getting from bean to cup.<\/p>\n

Depending on the farm or property, highlights may include picking ripe coffee cherries (seasonal), visiting the pulping and drying stations, trying your hand at roasting and grinding beans the traditional way, and even brewing a cup over an open fire. You can also go coffee tasting where you\u2019ll learn to identify notes like chocolate, citrus and floral tones.<\/p>\n

In terms of where to stay, Rivertrees Country Inn<\/a> is a delightful and well-manicured spot near a number of coffee farms, while Arusha Coffee Lodge<\/a> sits within Tanzania\u2019s largest coffee plantation in the foothills of Mount Meru.<\/p>\n

Meet Tanzania\u2019s tribes<\/h2>\n

Tanzania<\/a> just happens to be home to over 120 ethnic groups, each with their own distinct language, traditions, dress and history. Meeting members of one of these tribes is certainly one of the most interesting things to do in Tanzania.<\/p>\n

In northern Tanzania, around the regions of Arusha<\/a>, the Ngorongoro Crater<\/a> and Serengeti<\/a>, you can visit a Maasai homestead or embark on walks with your Maasai guide.<\/p>\n

There are a number of tribes in the vicinity of Lake Eyasi<\/a> including the Hadzabe people, one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer tribes in Africa. During time spent with members of the tribe, you\u2019ll learn how they forage, track animals and interpret nature, and get to know a little of their storytelling traditions, shared through a fierce sequence of clicks. Nearby, the Datoga people are known for their traditional blacksmithing, cattle herding and intricate facial tattoos.<\/p>\n
