Ask a Brit when you should visit the UK<\/a> and you’ll get a shrug, a glance at the sky, and a non-committal “well, it depends.” A little annoying, perhaps, but very honest! The UK doesn’t really do a single golden window when it comes to weather; instead, it does four very different moods, and the trick is matching that mood to what you’re after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thing that shapes a British trip isn’t the temperature (which rarely climbs high enough to bother you or drops low enough to stop you). It’s the daylight hours. On the longest day of the year, London<\/a> basks in roughly sixteen and a half hours of it, whilst in Edinburgh<\/a>, the sun rises at half four in the morning and is still glowing at ten at night \u2013 close to eighteen hours in total! Come midwinter, the whole thing flips: London is dark by four, and Edinburgh by half three. That single fact will do more to shape your days than any other weather condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the forecast? Pack a raincoat regardless and stop worrying about it. The weather here changes its mind hourly, sometimes within a single walk. The locals have made peace with it, and so should you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, season by season, here’s when to go \u2013 and, just as usefully, when to think twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spring (March to May)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you’ve ever wondered where Wordsworth got his daffodils, this is the season to find out. Spring is when the British countryside turns properly photogenic, and nowhere does it better than the Lake District<\/a>. The fells go green, the valleys fill with yolk-yellow daffodils and carpets of bluebells, and the fields are suddenly dotted with wobbly-legged lambs. Walk the shore of Ullswater, where the great man himself was wandering lonely as a cloud, and you’ll see exactly what the fuss is all about. May is your best bet of the lot \u2013 it’s the driest and sunniest month (fingers crossed) in a region that is otherwise the wettest in England, with just enough warmth for a proper hike and not nearly enough crowds to spoil it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In spring, the Cotswolds<\/a>\u2019 honey-coloured villages look magnificent against the fresh green hills. The grand gardens of Hidcote, Kiftsgate and Batsford also fling open their gates for the season, and the lanes fill with blossom and there are (yes) more lambs. May is arguably the single finest month to be here – and if you are indeed here, pop over to Cooper’s Hill near Gloucester and watch for grown adults hurling themselves down a near-vertical slope in pursuit of a runaway wheel of Double Gloucester. It is exactly as ridiculous as it sounds, and very much worth witnessing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, in London<\/a>, cherry blossom spills over Greenwich Park and Kew and wisteria spirals down the smarter houses of Notting Hill and Chiswick. The horticultural high point is the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, where garden designers, the odd celebrity and a fair sprinkling of actual royalty descend on the grounds of the Royal Hospital. Up in Edinburgh<\/a>, spring is the secret season \u2013 mild, manageable, and blissfully free of the August rush. The Royal Botanic Garden is at its freshest, and you can climb Arthur’s Seat without queuing for the view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The catch: spring weather is the least dependable of the year. In April, you might get sunshine and a hailstorm before lunch, but snow can linger on the higher Lakeland fells well into May, and the two May bank holidays briefly clog the prettier spots. Bring layers, plenty of waterproofs, and don’t trust a blue sky to last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top tip:<\/strong> May is the sweet spot, but dodge the bank holiday weekends (the last Monday of the month, and the first) if you’d rather not share your daffodils with half of England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summer (June to August)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In summer, the days stretch on forever in the UK, the beer gardens fill, and the events calendar goes into overdrive. June is the canny traveller’s month: daylight lasts past nine in the evening, the roses are out, and the lavender at Snowshill in the Cotswolds<\/a> begins its purple bloom (peaking late June into July). You\u2019ll get all the perks of summer, and the school-holiday hordes are still a few weeks off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

London<\/a> in summer is all about strawberries and cream at Wimbledon in July; the brass-and-bearskins pageantry of Trooping the Colour in June, which marks the King’s official birthday; and the glorious sound-system chaos of Notting Hill Carnival over the August bank holiday weekend. Add in the Proms, open-air theatre in Regent’s Park and concerts in Hyde Park, and you could fill a fortnight without ever leaving the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the summer headline belongs to Edinburgh<\/a>. For nearly the whole of August, the city hosts not one festival but five at once \u2013 the International Festival, the Fringe, the Military Tattoo on the castle esplanade, the Art Festival and the Book Festival \u2013 and its population roughly doubles. The Royal Mile becomes one long, rolling performance and the city is electric, exhausting, and unlike anywhere else on earth. It is also incredibly, incredibly busy. Accommodation books out months ahead and prices climb to silly heights, so reserve early or consider staying a little further out of the city (half an hour away by train, for example) and commute in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lake District<\/a> can also be rather busy in the summer season, and car parks at the popular walks and trails fill up early. The fells are at their wettest now, too and August can involve a startling amount of rain. But, there\u2019s a simple fix: start early, and steer clear of the obvious peaks in favour of the quieter ones. The same logic applies in the Cotswolds<\/a>, where Bibury and Bourton-on-the-Water (the region’s most-visited village) are heaving by lunchtime. Come at dawn, or save them for a quieter season, and spend the bright hours on the escarpment walks where the real magic lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top tip:<\/strong> If Edinburgh in August is the plan, book your bed the moment you can \u2013 six months ahead is not over-keen. Leave it late and you might be sleeping in Glasgow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Autumn (September to October)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Autumn is one of the best times to visit the UK, and hardly anyone tells you so. September is the great trick of the British calendar, offering warmer and drier conditions than August, but with the school holidays over and the crowds melting away. The Cotswolds<\/a> is at its most contented now, all blackberry-heavy hedgerows and harvest fairs, with ideal walking weather along the Cotswold Way. Edinburgh<\/a>, having held its breath through August, finally eases up and the locals reclaim their caf\u00e9s as the queues vanish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then October arrives and turns up the colour. The Cotswold arboretums at Westonbirt and Batsford blaze copper, gold and crimson, while in the Lakes the woods around Borrowdale, Buttermere and Grizedale the bracken on the hillsides turns a beautiful deep amber. It’s prime time for wildlife, too: red squirrels are busy among the trees, and the stags begin their bellowing autumn rut. London<\/a> turns to bonfires and fireworks for Guy Fawkes Night on the 5th of November, with ghost walks through Highgate Cemetery for the spooky-inclined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The one thing to watch is the light. Daylight drains away fast through September and October, so those long, lazy days of June simply aren’t on offer. At this time of year, plan the bigger walks for early in the season. By late October the Lakes<\/a> turn damp and blowy, which is atmospheric from a pub window but rather less so halfway up a mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top tip:<\/strong> If you can only come once and want the finest all-round odds (decent weather, thin crowds, kinder prices), make it the second or third week of September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winter (December to February)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Winter in the UK is largely about the cities. London<\/a> does Christmas with gusto: Winter Wonderland sprawls across Hyde Park, ice rinks glitter at the Tower of London and the Natural History Museum, Kew lights up its glasshouses, and New Year’s Eve closes with fireworks bursting over the Houses of Parliament. It’s busy, sparkly, and really lovely time to be in the capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edinburgh<\/a>, however, owns the turning of the year. Hogmanay (Scottish New Year) is a multi-day affair beginning with a torchlight procession that winds through the Old Town on the 30th of December, before a hundred thousand revellers pack onto Princes Street for a street party that ends with the castle erupting in fireworks at midnight on the 31st. Tickets go on sale in autumn and sell out by early December, so this is one to organise well ahead. The Cotswolds<\/a>, meanwhile, does the storybook version of the season, with frost on the windowsills of ivy-clad cottages, Christmas markets in Cirencester and Chipping Campden, and pub fires to thaw out beside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In winter, the Lake District<\/a> turns dramatic and the high peaks are dusted white against the dark water. But a word of real caution here: the higher fells, including Helvellyn, Skiddaw and Blencathra, become serious mountain terrain in winter, with snow, ice and ferocious wind. You really need crampons, an ice axe and the know-how to use both to tackle them. At this time of year, choose lower-level walks and a cosy inn for a pub lunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The upside of deep winter (January and February, once Hogmanay is done) is solitude and a bargain. Prices fall, the famous villages empty out, and you can park in Cotswold lanes that are bumper-to-bumper come summer. The trade-off is chilly, short days, and some of the rural attractions shut up shop until spring (although it\u2019s really not many and only in the deepest countryside).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top tip:<\/strong> For peace and quiet, visit in late January or February – but just not if you’re chasing daylight, because in Edinburgh it\u2019ll be gone by mid-afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
