Salvador de Bahia is an insatiable mix of old and new, which you’ll discover on walkabouts through the city. Ride the iconic Lacerda Elevator to the Upper City, where you’ll find its historic Pelourinho district – visit the diverting Casa do Carnaval and São Francisco Church, and enjoy a refreshing cachaca as samba music fills the air. Locals will tell you (and we wholeheartedly agree) that seeing the Basilica do Senhor do Bonfim in the Lower City is a must. You could also go on a deep dive into Salvador’s rich culture and heritage with a private guide, followed by a spot of shopping at the Mercado Modelo and a tasty seafood dinner overlooking the Bay of All Saints.
Many of Brazil’s traditions and pastimes were born on this stretch of coast from the samba to capoeira, and experiencing them here is pure magic.
Meander through Santo Antônio além do Carmo, a quaint, cobbled and very artsy enclave with colonial forts, churches and stunning views over the bay. Also, pop into the Mercado Modelo for all your souvenir buying.
Taking place in February each year, Carnival is an amazing time to be in Salvador de Bahia, but it’s also the busiest. If you aren’t too bothered about missing the festivities, April and May are quieter months to see the sights.
