Straddling no less than three countries (Rwanda, Uganda and DRC), the mist-enshrouded Virunga Mountains are home to almost a third of the world’s most enchanting primates: the mountain gorilla.
You’ll be headed to Virunga National Park, the oldest on the continent and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The landscapes here are spell-bindingly beautiful and walking through the densely-packed forests, sunlight bouncing off the leaves and birds flittering overhead, elevates the trekking experience to off-the-charts incredible.
Led by trackers who know the forest like the back of their hand, you’ll set off in the early hours, trekking for up to three hours. Once you reach the family of habituated gorillas you have been matched with, spend a life-changing hour watching them groom, snack and play before heading back to base where you'll be rewarded with an iced Congolese beer.
While many of these rainforests are fairly damp year-round, the best and least rainy time to go trekking is between June and August.
