Relax and explore the waters of Tchegera Island

Markedly more still and tranquil than hiking volcanoes and gorilla tracking, the waters of Lake Kivu are the keepers of Tchegera Island. Rather distinctive with its crescent shape, the island provides a springboard for exploring the water by kayak or paddleboard, snorkelling or swimming - or simply laying your head on something soft and admire the birdlife, butterflies and lapping shoreline. You could also explore the tiny isle along one of its nature trails. Tchegera is the half-submerged rim of an extinct volcano, and should you choose to spend a night here (there's just a single camp), you'll have incredible views of the glowing red figures of the island's active neighbours.
