Dreaming of a Cape Dutch getaway in Franschhoek's emerald winelands?
Basse Provence is a historic Cape Dutch guesthouse and vineyard in Franschhoek, a small corner of France in the Cape’s famous winelands. Dating back to 1855, the building's original Huguenot style has been faithfully restored, with a blend of traditional Cape country living and modern facilities offering the sort of comfort you dream about. Guests stay in the original Manor House, the adjacent Country House, or a charming self-contained cottage. This beautiful estate has rolling lawns dotted with centuries-old oak trees overlooking the vineyards, with the dramatic ridge of the Franschhoek Mountains as the backdrop.

The property

The main guest area has a authentic Cape Dutch mood, with original high timber ceilings, polished wooden floors, and elegant sash windows overlooking the gardens. There is a comfortable lounge and bar area, with wi-fi for those who need to keep in touch. Breakfast is served beside the open fireplace in the dining room, or outside on the swimming pool terrace. Barbecue facilities are available and there's also the option of dining at the neighbouring Rickety Bridge Estate.

The rooms

The original Manor House has three beautifully appointed suites, with a further four suites in the adjoining double-storey Country House. The upper rooms are under thatch, with poplar beams and an air of the old Cape Dutch farm style. All rooms are en-suite, with vast bathrooms and separate showers. In a secluded spot in the gardens is a modern two-bedroomed cottage, with its own lounge, kitchen and private terrace – perfect for families. You'll be very comfortable here.

Activities

Guests are invited to dine at Paulina's Restaurant on the neighbouring Rickety Bridge Estate, and of course to enjoy some of the delicious locally produced wines. The quaint village of Franschhoek is a few minutes’ drive away, with an array of restaurants, coffee shops, art galleries and markets within easy strolling distance. Try the hop-on, hop-off wine tram, which will take you on a tour of some of the world-class vineyards for which this valley is famous.
