About Honeyguide Mantobeni Tented Camp

Private slice of wilderness near the iconic Kruger National Park.
Tucked in a grove of tamboti trees, Honeyguide Mantobeni Tented Camp is the perfect compromise between the rustic and the refined. Its setting, in a private reserve adjoining the Kruger National Park, allows you to have both the option of exploring South Africa's largest wilderness area, and the advantage of retreating to a quieter slice. The 23,000 hectares of Manyeleti Game Reserve are, however, home to all of the Big Five and therefore extremely productive bush. Accommodation here harkens back to the early days of bush travel, but supplies a fair number of slick modern luxuries to keep you comfortable.

Property details

The property

A long, earth-toned elevated structure forms the centre of camp. Although the word "camp" is an understatement – with a temperature-regulated wine cellar, this is decidedly sophisticated. From here you can watch wildlife meander past from a wicker sofa or a seat at the broad dining table. In this area, lounging and dining and in-betweening happens throughout the day, whether you're enjoying a drink on the veranda, a good book in the open-sided lounge, or invigorating laps in the pool.

The rooms

Fifteen luxury tents sit raised on platforms on either side of the main area. Just outside each tent, on the elevated porch and under cover, a leather sofa-clad lounge area acts as an ideal inside-out space to put your feet up. Through secured flaps you'll find the bedroom, with its king-sized or two twin beds dressed with mosquito netting. A sunken concrete bath is a superb addition to the bathroom, which also has a double basin and shower.

Activities

Set on a private conservancy that's unfenced from neighbouring Kruger, the camp's siting has several obvious benefits: walking safaris with a guide (those here are top-class), night drives, game viewing with a limited number of vehicles. But expansive Kruger Park is nearby, and definitely worth getting to. The chance to see the major bush players – lion, leopard, elephant, giraffe, rhino, buffalo, hyena, cheetah, plus some lesser-known species like honey badgers and porcupine, make this spot hard to fault. Bring your best camera for those special up-close images.

Game drives day and night, unhindered by national park restrictions. This means you can do things like follow a pride of lions on the prowl after sunset.
Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

Sitting opposite a waterhole, the hide is the place to be, whether you’re an all-out twitcher or just dipping your toe in the water. Birdwatching is especially magical in summer (December to March) – look out for kori bustard, one of the rarest birds on the Red List, or any of the reserve's 300-plus recorded species.
Something to think about

Something to think about

The camp has an age restriction of 12 years or older, so young families will need to look elsewhere. It’s also worth noting that wifi access is limited.
