Ithumba Hill Camp is owned by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. It is their newest self-catering retreat and was created to offer increased luxury for guests exploring Tsavo East’s remote northern area whilst visiting the Trust’s Ithumba elephant orphans. The luxury tented camp was opened in 2015. It has an elevated position halfway up Ithumba Hill, and enjoys breath-taking views across Tsavo’s vast landscape. Like the trusts two other properties, it has been designed for the more intrepid traveller who enjoys travelling off the beaten track.
The camp is built on a hill and incorporates high standards of construction and decor. There is plenty of space to relax and unwind in. One can climb the hill to get an amazing view of the expansive wilderness. From the lounge area upstairs, one can enjoy the spectacular sunsets and sunrises for which Tsavo is known, often with Kilimanjaro visible above the distant southern horizon. The traditional Lapa is great for meals and drinks or just lazing around.
Ithumba Hill has four spacious and elegant raised tented bedrooms. They sleep up to eight guests who have exclusive use of the camp. Each bedroom is built into its own secluded location on Ithumba Hill, and has an en-suite bathroom area exposed to the sky, and a spacious, elevated balcony with loungers. The floor-to-ceiling mesh gives 180 degree views of Ithumba’s stunning vistas. The rooms can be made into double or twin rooms with customised mattresses and high-quality linen.
In order to stay at this camp, guests need to sponsor one of the Sheldrick orphans. They can visit the elephant orphans nearby at the nearby Ithumba station twice a day and enjoy the midday mud-bath and the feeding of the elephant orphans. Game drives and bush walks are offered. Walks to the river and swimming in the river is also available. Guests can also relax at the main camp and watch the small game at the waterhole.
