It may have sprawling communal areas both indoor and out, but the simplicity of Kia Lodge works in its favour. Meals are served at large banquet-style dining tables set in a horseshoe shape to invite conversation. Indoors, there are numerous comfortable seating areas; outside there's a large swimming pool with recliners and an open bar – settle back with a Kilimanjaro beer, enjoy the garden's birdlife and gaze across the Maasai plains to Kili, Mount Meru and the Blue Mountains.
Kia Lodge has 40 thatched brick cottages tucked in secluded positions throughout the savanna gardens. All the rooms are large enough for a short stay, and are appointed with basic needs – twin or double beds with mosquito nets, en-suite bathrooms, simple wooden seating and African artefacts. The windows allow good light and views of the property.
As Kia is primarily a stopover lodge, activities come at an extra charge. You can arrange day trips into the Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park and even Arusha National Park, all of which have great game and birdwatching. Visit the local hot springs or, for a touch of culture, visit a local Maasai village to discover the customs of this fascinating country.
Dusty, rustic and a little bit quirky, there’s plenty to do in Arusha before or after a safari.
