About Kipalo Hills

A charming rustic East African bush camp off Kenya's beaten tourist track.
Kipalo Hills is a delightfully rustic tented safari camp in a remote private concession bordering Kenya’s Tsavo West National Park. Designed with traditional East African safaris in mind, this wonderful camp really does capture the sense of adventure and wild feel for which this region is renowned. The lodge has eight comfortable tents and a central guest area set along the rugged Mbulia Hills, with sweeping views over the Tsavo Plains and the magnificent Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. Best for walking safaris, this reserve also shelters one of the largest elephant populations, plus a staggeringly rich bird life.

Property details

The property

Nestled into the lush forests of Mbulia Hills, the main guest area flows with the undulating contours under traditional thatch, with stone floors and chunky timbers throughout the open-plan lounge and covered dining area. Meals are also served alongside the pool, or out under the skies around a fire. On the edge of the deck, a beautiful rock pool overlooks a waterhole and the densely wooded valleys and mountains beyond. A small spa offers pampering treatments between activities.

The rooms

Eight comfortable East African-style canvas suites are set amongst the trees on the hillside, with wonderful views through vast gauze windows of the surrounding bush. Each can be used as a double or twin, with plenty of space for an extra bed if necessary. Furnished with authentic safari flair and a simple style, they have just the right level of comfort without detracting from the rustic feel, with hot and cold running water, flush toilets and a bucket shower.

Activities

Day and night game drives across this rambling wilderness offer the chance to encounter a variety of wildlife, including large herds of elephant and incredible birdlife. However, game viewing can be challenging in this remote area due to dense bush, tricky terrain and the absence of other vehicles, and the best way to explore is on foot with one of the highly experienced local guides. Fly camping, all-day picnics and cultural visits to the local Maasai villages are also possible.
