Lonno Lodge appears out of the tropical foliage in a majestic combination of Arabic towers and rustic thatch roofs. Built from naturally-white coral stone, the hotel looks and feels fresh and inviting, and the gardens surrounding the main buildings are equally as attractive. In the main buildings, you'll find an Italian-inspired restaurant, bar, a saltwater swimming pool and a charming spa. Head to the top of the turrets to the secluded roof terraces for the best views across the ocean and powdery sand.
The eight beautiful rooms are simple but beautiful, and all feature creamy white walls, wooden beams and plenty of exposed brick work. Chunky wooden furnishings are carved by local artisans and the bright Kenyan textiles and fabrics are homely and fun. The two tower suites, high up in the turrets, are spacious and bright, whilst the lower suites are spread over two levels and have private patios or terraces. Bathrooms are clean and unfussy, with a clever design that allows for natural airflow throughout.
The lodge owners actively encourage you to head out and explore the area, and are more than happy to recommend a number of excellent local operators. Options include forest walks, mangrove adventures and mountain bike trips. If you're more taken with the watery activities, there's plenty of water sports available from diving and wind surfing to paragliding and snorkelling. There's also turtle education programs to take part in, cultural visits, a golf course and of course, plenty of beach to relax on as well as wonderful Swedish massages in the lodge spa.
Dazzling beaches, a world-class marine park and a dose of history – welcome to Watamu.
