Wilderness Stay Longer, Pay Less Special
Built to emulate the traditional Himba settlements of this part of the world, Serra Cafema is as environmentally sensitive as it’s possible for a lodge to be. It’s solar-powered, all materials used in the build were sustainable and/or recycled, and it was built in partnership with the local community. That doesn’t mean that style wasn’t a consideration however, and the main areas are open and airy and full of elegant leather armchairs and beautiful artworks. For relaxing, there’s a cosy bar area, an elevated deck with views over the Kunene River into Angola and a small plunge pool.
There are only eight villas at Serra Cafema, all raised on decks and overlooking the swirling waters of the Kunene. Crafted from wood, canvas and thatch, they are at one with the incredible landscapes and almost seem to blend imperceptibly into the boughs of the trees. Inside, they are elegant hideouts with a few modern touches here and there to keep you comfortable: glass-walled rain showers, four-poster beds with the softest of sheets, and striking sepia photographs.
Take a boat cruise on the Kunene River to enjoy rose-hued sunset views and for the chance to see crocodiles, baboons and other wildlife. Nature drives and walks through the Hartmann’s Valley are a must to experience some of the shyer and more reclusive inhabitants of the Namib, such as the chameleon. You may also visit one of the local Himba villages, quad bike (or walk) through the desert dunes, or simply relax, soak up the sun and enjoy the phenomenal views from camp.
Serra Cafema Camp is owned by Wilderness safaris which aims to double its conservation impact by 2030, protecting 6 million acres of land. Their framework focuses on Educate, Empower, and Protect pillars, building a conservation economy, nurturing future leaders, and preserving unfenced wilderness. Through immersive hospitality experiences and partnerships with nonprofits like Children in the Wilderness and the Wilderness Trust, they engage guests in conservation efforts and address diverse threats to wilderness, wildlife, and communities.
