What to do in Chiloé Island

Off the shores of Chilean Patagonia, Chiloé is the second largest island in South America, and promises culture, history and spectacular scenery in abundance. Discover stories of old in its aged churches, colourful stilted houses and towns, including the capital, Castro - don't skip dining on its impeccable seafood. Explore Puñihuil to see the extremely rare Humboldt and animated Magallanic penguins, who live in colonies along the coast. Then again, you might prefer to admire it all from the water, where you could spot blue whales and other marine life.

Visit the Islotes de Puñihuil Natural Monument

After being picked up from our hotel in Castro we will head northbound towards the city of Ancud. There we will take time to explore the local market and a museum. We will then continue driving along the western coast of the island to reach the natural monument of Puñihuil where Humboldt and Magellan penguins breed together. There we will have time to enjoy lunch by the sea (not included) before boarding a boat for an up-close look at the penguins. Along the way, a variety of sea birds will accompany us creating a one of a kind scenery. In the afternoon we will return to our hotel.

Go hiking in Chiloe National Park

After being picked up from our hotel in Castro we will head southbound towards the Chiloé National Park, bordering the Huillinco and Cucao lakes. When we reach the entrance of the park we will leave our vehicle and start our low difficulty hiking to explore our surroundings. We will follow a trail that will impress us with its wonderful scenery and amazing biodiversity. Subsequently, we will continue towards an indigenous community called Quilque where we will enjoy a picnic style lunch including typical dishes of the island. After this we will board our vehicle once again to reach the town of Chonchi where we will visit its church, declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
