Where to go whale watching in South Africa
Finding the gentle giants of the sea
The "Perfume Island" offers quite the potpourri of experiences beyond its aromatic reputation. Andilana Beach provides the requisite tropical paradise with white sands and crystal waters, while beneath the surface, sea turtles and seasonal whale sharks steal the spotlight. The last patch of primary rainforest houses some rather entertaining residents - black lemurs swing overhead while panther chameleons add splashes of colour to the greenery. Day trips to Nosy Komba bring close encounters with friendly lemurs, and the marine reserve at Nosy Tanikely offers prime snorkelling territory. Mont Passot serves up the best sunset views over the crater lakes, while the sacred tree of Mahatsinjo offers a glimpse into Sakalava cultural heritage. Hell-Ville's markets provide a proper dose of local life, and if you're about in May, the Donia Festival adds a brilliant dash of Malagasy music and dance to the mix.
