Kristin’s Journey Around Namibia

Beautiful and brazen, wild and whimsical
by Timbuktu5 min read

A country like no other on the continent, the blood-red deserts, vast horizons and incredible wildlife of Namibia make for a fantastic trip – and Kristin’s was no different!

Kristin’s journey took her on a driving circuit of northern Namibia through boulder-stuffed landscapes and towering dunes, up mystical coastlines and into private reserves jam-packed with desert rhino and elephants.

Read on to find out what she got up to and how to plan your very own trip to this startling country…

“Our trip kicked off in the stunning Sossusvlei region – but with a bit of a twist! Camp Sossus is located in the private Neuhof Reserve, which promises all the desert highlights of the Namib-Sossusvlei area, but from a quiet and exclusive base.”

“First up was the iconic, apricot dunes of Sossusvlei. Climb the dunes – Big Daddy is the most popular of them all – for the best views, or embark on a quad bike or horseback adventure in the surrounding reserves.”

“A jaunt in the petrified forest of Deadvlei completes any Sossusvlei experience and is the perfect stop for a quick snap, or two or three (or four)…”

“The Skeleton Coast was next on the itinerary. The drive up the Atlantic Coast (with or without a stop in Swakopmund) is astonishingly beautiful and arriving at the gates of the national park is eerie, mystical and exciting. We even enjoyed the infamous fog on our arrival!”

“Set right in the middle of the wind-swept dunes, the rooms at Shipwreck Lodge are modelled on old ships that washed up on the misty shores. Activities include riverbed drives to spot desert wildlife, visiting weathered shipwrecks, and gazing at the extraordinary scenery.”

“You may have heard that Namibia provides gasp-worthy scenery at every turn and, after my time in boulder-strewn Damaraland, I know that to be true.”

“Sculpted into the granite boulders, Onduli Ridge is a dreamy location from which to discover the delights of Damaraland, be it tracking rhino or desert-elephant, admiring the rock art at Twyfelfontein, or e-biking on the scenic trails.”

“And alongside that scenery is a wonderful, authentic culture. In the Erongo region, I spent time with the Herero people, a proud culture who fiercely safeguard their heritage and customs from the outside world.”

“And there’s no way I could leave out the wildlife. I was privileged enough to spy white rhino at Epako Safari Lodge, located on a private reserve in Erongo, which is also home to leopard, cheetah, zebra and hyena. This is only one gem in Namibia’s wildlife crown, however, and Etosha provides another sparkling highlight.”

What better way to round off a trip than with sundowners overlooking the wilderness? We’ll definitely cheers to that!
