Volcanoes experiences

Towering, rumbling, smoking sentinels that hold incredible power, the world’s volcanoes demand your full attention. They are bewitchingly beautiful, from moss-covered cones in Ecuador to the wildlife-filled slopes of Costa Rica and central Africa, and whether you're trekking around them, peering into them, or just picnicking with a view, a volcano will always guarantee a serious wow factor. And the best bit? The photos are always epic!

Hike around the crater lakes at Kibale

Sprinkled amongst the forests and plains of Kibale, you'll find a number of crater lakes, which were formed following volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago. With your seasoned guide leading the way, you'll hike the dramatic and striking 'Top of the World' trail. Walk along the spacious crater rims, sometimes beside mystical green lakes and at other times next to deeply inviting water where you can stop for a swim. From this panoramic viewpoint, take in the surreal landscape of rushing waterfalls, deep green forests and, on the clearest days, the 'Mountains of the Moon'. Then, return to your lodge for a well-earned pamper.

Hike around the crater lakes of Mount Bisoke

Out of the five towering massifs in Volcanoes National Park, Mount Bisoke lures you on a hike to the top with its glistening crater lakes. Depart in the early morning mist to trek through the leafy forest, perhaps even spotting elephant, buffalo and golden monkey along the way. You can make a pit stop at the midway lake, but the real drawcard is the lake at Mount Bisoke's summit, where the views of its neighbouring volcanoes are enchanting and a picnic on the shore is just what's needed. The terrain is not terribly demanding but with a height of 3700 m, the hike still needs a good level of fitness. The weather also determines how long you stay at the lake and rainy season brings muddy trails, so the dry months of June to September are your best bet.

Hike the vast and dramatic Empakai Crater

Leave camp just after dawn or in the soft sun of the afternoon, to explore the Ngorongoro's little brother on foot. The Empakai Crater is an ancient volcano caldera ringed by walls of lush forest where birds of every feather flit between the strangler figs and you may spot blue monkeys swinging from branches and bushbucks in the thicket. At the crater's edge, you can see the endless Tanzania plains, the snow-topped Mount Kilimanjaro and Tanzania's most recently active volcano. In the crater's belly, a glimmering alkaline lake is home to a flurry of flamingo and buffalo who stop for a drink. It's quite a trek so reasonable walking fitness is a 'must'.
