About Abalone Lodge

Uninterrupted ocean (and whale spouting) views from one of Hermanus' finest hotels.
The owners of Abalone Lodge must have really done something good in a past life to have nabbed this gorgeous locale in Hermanus, surrounded by fynbos-covered mountains and the denim-blue Indian Ocean. Did someone mention whale watching as you tuck into a buffet breakfast on the sunny terrace? Sitting happily between the centre of town and the Blue Flag beaches, it's also an easy amble from the famous Scenic Cliff Path and a variety of pretty walks. Back at base, the lodge itself is effortlessly stylish with chic yet beachy interiors, light wood and tones, and South African artwork throughout.

Property details

The property

Amidst swathes of fragrant heather, Abalone Lodge is a wonderful retreat in the town of Hermanus. There's a sauna and secluded pool that enjoys all day sun, and plenty of pinstriped loungers and nest chairs to loll about in. Filled with lots of natural light, the dining area and fire-warmed lounge has a laidback but well-styled feel, with lovely decor ranging from wooden fish sculptures to local artwork and surfaces dotted with orchids and local proteas. The wellness centre offers a variety of treatments for a few hours of pampering.

The rooms

The rooms are elegant and airy, designed in soft blue, cream and white hues, with painted rafters that offer a real sense of space. On the ground or first floor, each room leads through French doors onto a private patio, perfect for taking every advantage of Hermanus' status as the land-based whale watching capital of the world. Glass-walled bathrooms feature a deep tub and double basins, while others have a separate dressing table. State-of-the-art amenities include underfloor heating, heated towel rails and Africology toiletries

Activities

Step out the front door and practically straight onto the Scenic Cliff Path, walk to the top of Hoy's Kopje (the 'Jewel of Hermanus'), or head into the Fernkloof Nature Reserve for all the hiking, cycling and birdwatching you'd like. Discover Hermanus' bevy of stunning beaches for a swim, a picnic or watersports: kayaking, shark cage diving and surfing of every kind is available. If you're visiting between June and December, the southern right whales can be spotted off the coast - why not see them close-up on a boating trip?

Something to think about

There is no restaurant for in-house dinners, but Hermanus isn't one of the Cape's foodie spots for nothing. Ask the manager for some tips!

South Africa

Hermanus

It’s famous for whale-watching, but the wine is also worth a taste in this laidback coastal town.
