A tapering staircase leads into the house and reception area and, beyond, a great light-bathed room with a central planted garden, walls adorned with pan-African artwork, and a cosy alcove that's ideal for a quiet read. The dining room is welcoming, the bar is well-stocked, and the decor blends the clean lines of modernism with African art to create a uniquely pan-African feel. Outdoors are the lovely gardens, with a shining pool. There's a gym too – an unexpected treat.
Rooms here vary in size, but all are immaculate, uniquely decorated (from the blue Zanzibar Room to the Namibia Room and Swahili Suite), with plenty of light. En-suite bathrooms are standard, as are aircon, ceiling fans, small fridges, TV and a coffee/tea station. The compact Standard Rooms have double beds; larger Guest Rooms have both bathtub and shower, and a cushioned window seat overlooking the garden; Suites are spacious, with larger seating area, kitchenette, walk-in closet, and fully equipped bathroom.
Africa House is undoubtedly one of the best places to stay in Lilongwe. It's primary appeal is its location – an easy stopover between Lake Malawi and eastern Zambia – and the relaxed atmosphere. The capital city has some vibrant traditional markets and a few historical points of interest, but is not a major attraction in itself. There's a wildlife sanctuary that rehabilitates rescued animals from crocodiles to monkeys, and a botanical garden – both worth a visit.
Africa House can be booked with Timbuktu as part of a tailor-made Malawi trip, rather than as a standalone room reservation. Start online, customising one of our recommended Malawi trips featuring Africa House or get advice and suggestions from one of our Malawi specialists who will design the trip around your dates, check availability and handle every booking for you.
Stays at Africa House start from around $110, or US$110, per person per night as part of a tailor-made trip. The exact price depends on your travel dates, room type and the shape of the rest of your itinerary. A Timbuktu travel specialist can give you an accurate quote for your dates.

Lively yet laidback, modern yet traditional, Lilongwe is a classic capital city of two halves.
