The main guest area on a broad expanse of raised wooden decks features richly coloured natural stone floors and open-plan dining and bar areas under thatch. Chunky wooden décor and vibrantly coloured furnishings reflect traditional Eastern Cape style throughout the spacious interior, which curves around a central open courtyard. On the far edge of the deck, a stone-fringed swimming pool overlooks the hills and valleys where wildlife is often spotted from the comfort of your sun lounger.
Three king-sized tented suites are thoughtfully positioned for absolute privacy along raised wooden walkways linking back to the main lodge. A fourth suite with an inter leading second bedroom is perfect for families. All are en-suite, with outdoor showers and deep free-standing baths. Earthy décor, roll-up canvas windows and extra touches like a complimentary mini bar, bathrobes, heaters and fans create a blissful tented safari experience which is a far cry from basic.
Twice-daily game drives regularly produce great sightings of lions, leopards, cheetah, rhino, herds of elephant and buffalo, and substantial plains game. Amakhala is also home to several rarely-seen species – you might be fortunate to catch a glimpse of an elusive aardvark or a shy brown hyena, particularly at night. More than 250 bird species have been recorded in this area. Guided walks, river cruises, and visits to the nearby craft centre and Shamwari’s Born Free Foundation are easily arranged.
