Surrounded by turmeric-yellow mansions and balconies overflowing with flowers, Amarla sits pretty in the heart of Cartagena's walled city. Inspired by its enchanting Spanish-Caribbean history, Amarla was built as a home for travellers from around the world. Authentic craftsmanship is evident throughout the original architecture and decor, while Colombian culture is celebrated with activities like cigar rolling and coffee tasting. The property

Amidst the terracotta-tiled rooftops of Cartagena, you'll find a lovely secluded pool lined with white banquettes. Each day begins with a breakfast of market-fresh ingredients accompanied by some of the best coffee around, while dinner is served on the rooftop or in the courtyard. There are skilled yogis on hand to offer a variety of classes, while meditative gong baths also take place on the roof. In terms of style, Balinese influences mingle with artisanal Colombian decor and furnishings.

The rooms

Amarla has just seven guest rooms, each named after a native Colombian bird and inspired by their colourful plumage. Classic, locally-made furnishings and creamy cotton bedding are complemented by nature-infused artwork. Each room has a selection of aromatic teas and snacks, while the turn-down service includes a pillow menu and the pillow scent of your choice. The bathrooms have a tropical feel and brightly-coloured silk gowns ready for use. In-room treatments like hot stone and Thai massages are also available.

Activities

Amarla is within walking distance of a number of Cartagena's noted attractions including the picturesque Bolivar Park and Palace of the Inquisition. Enjoy meandering walks through the walled city where you'll find plenty of original merchant homes and wander past the El Torre del Reloj clocktower, the Museo de Arte Moderne, and El Teatro de Adolfo Mejia Heredia, one of the most remarkable buildings in Cartagena. The hotel also offers an assortment of on-site activities including cigar rolling, rum tasting, cooking and dance classes.
