The heart of the lodge is an open-plan thatched timber dining room and bar, with rich natural tones of rosewood and bamboo, and colourful locally produced works of art. Outdoors is a terrace with several comfortable seating areas where guests can relax and enjoy a special Malagasy cocktail while admiring the views. Cuisine is a tasty fusion of French and local dishes featuring seasonal local produce and delicious seafood. (Vegetarian? Try the ratatouille.) There's limited wi-fi in the main area.
Winding pathways lead from the main area through the garden to 12 spacious, thatched wooden bungalows, spaced well apart for privacy. Each has an en-suite bathroom, and plenty of space for an extra bed or two for families, if required. The furnishings are simple and comfortable, with mosquito nets, warm natural colours throughout, and an elevated private outdoor timber deck facing the Ambre Mountain Forest or the Bay of Diego in the distance.
Ambre Mountain NP is one of the most biologically diverse places on the island – a wonderland of lush montane forest, crater lakes and sparkling waterfalls. Guided walks to view lemurs, birds and other endemic species can be arranged, and the park is within easy driving distance if you prefer exploring on your own. The vibrant coastal town of Antsiranana (previously Diego Suarez) is about 30 kilometres away. And when you can explore no more, the lodge offers great massages.
Chase waterfalls, hike, and marvel at the smaller things in this rainforest paradise.
