About Batoka Zambezi Sands

Bedouin tents, a mighty river, and hippos on the boardwalk after dark.

The Zambezi National Park stretches upstream from Victoria Falls, and Batoka Zambezi Sands is in its western reaches, about 25 kilometres from the roar of the Falls where the soundtrack is the birdsong and not much else. Bedouin-style tented suites are strung along the riverbank, ensconced by riverine fig, ebony, and mopane woodland, each perfectly positioned for uninterrupted views across the broad, khaki-green water. Refurbished in 2022 by South African interior designer Yvonne O'Brien, the lodge is run by the female-founded Batoka Hospitality group, solar-powered and Beyond Green-certified. Wonderful. Surrounded by epic wilderness, game drives, bush walks, and river drift cruises fill the days.

Property details

The property

The bar, lounge and dining room are perched on stilts above the river and the teak furniture, wooden floors, pewter ornaments and worn leather sofas are comfortable but stylish. An open kitchen keeps things sociable at mealtimes, while a sunken fire pit on the outer deck brings guests together as the light fades over the water. A riverside pool, on-site spa programme of bush meditations, yoga and treatments, and Wi-Fi in the main lodge complete the picture.

The rooms

Redesigned by The Private House Company under O'Brien's meticulous eye, the tented suites are models of understated refinement with their natural materials, earthy tones, and beautiful linens. Each has an open-plan en-suite bathroom with twin vanities, a freestanding bath, and an outdoor shower, plus a private deck for watching the watery goings-on. Pool Suites step it up a notch and have a private splash pool integrated right into the deck - a genuine treat at the end of a dusty game drive.

Activities

Sunrise and sunset game drives offer the chance to see four of the Big Five (no rhino) in both the riverine forest and the open plains of Zambezi National Park, an underrated reserve that most visitors sprint past on their way to the Falls. River cruises put you eye-level with hippos and crocodiles at their most dramatic, while guided bush walks offer a slower, sharper kind of attention. Victoria Falls is an hour away for the full, thundering spectacle, and helicopter flights over the gorge can easily be arranged through the lodge.

Why we love it

Why we love it

The boardwalks connecting the tents to the main lodge exist for a very good reason — hippos graze in and around camp after dark, which adds a little frisson to the after-dinner stroll!

Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

Bush breakfast is always a standout moment of any stay. Eggs and coffee beside the Zambezi with elephant moving through the treeline is hard to beat.

Something to think about

Something to think about

The lodge is roughly an hour from Victoria Falls so this isn't the right base for guests splitting time between the Falls and the bush.
