Previously a royal summerhouse, the traditional architecture at the Belmond is as lovely as you might imagine. Inside, expect chic colonial decor, gorgeous, locally-produced furnishings and wonderful artwork hanging in every corner. Outside, the infinity pool terrace is the ultimate place to settle and take in the views, and next door is the Mekong Spa, just waiting for you to fall into a fluffy robe and slippers. Food is delicious, and the Phou Savanh Restaurant serves dishes of both French and local origin to tantalise and delight.
The 34 rooms are whitewashed, elegant and incredibly calming, each beautifully clad with rosewood floorboards and a fluttering, organza-trimmed four poster bed. Private balconies and terraces have cushioned day beds, and views of the gardens, the pool, or that wonderful mountain. The spacious bathrooms have tubs for soaking in at the end of a long day and there is a lovely selection of soothing toiletries to properly indulge.
Visiting the city at sunrise for the traditional Tak Bak almsgiving is a wonderful experience, especially when combined with a walking tour of the temples. Culture vultures will enjoy taking part in traditional Baci ceremonies, visiting a Laotian farm, or exploring the nearby villages for a taste of local life, whilst adventurers will be right at home in the Buddha-decorated Pak Ou Caves and the Kuang Si waterfall. There are also cookery classes and food tours to get involved in, and lots of markets to visit for both souvenirs and local tastes.
Graceful sights and picturesque surrounds make this chocolate-box town an enduring delight.
