*Closed for extensive refurbishment from 18 March to 20 September 2024* This well-appointed and intimate tented camp is located in Ngala Private Reserve within Timbavati, the first private nature reserve to remove the fences that separated it from its neighbour, Kruger National Park. This satellite camp to Ngala Game Lodge is set beneath giant shady trees on the banks of the seasonal Timbavati River, and is known for its Big Five and wild dog sightings. Game, walking and photographic safaris are led by expert guides and trackers, who make sure that no rock is left unturned in pursuit of the animals.

Ngala Tented Camp’s main areas are strung along the riverbank and, depending on the season, offer views of its flowing water or dry riverbed, which is used as an animal highway. The communal main tent is raised off the ground on a wooden platform, with a banquet-style dining table at one end and squishy, inviting sofas at the other. Ouside is a viewing deck and ample seating, leading to a swimming pool, spa and a campfire area for sundowners.
With just nine tented suites tucked beneath the trees, a private camp experience is assured. Like the communal area, the canvas, stone and wood tents are raised on platforms. Inside, the decor is easy on the eye, with neutral colours and soft green fabrics. All tents have air conditoning, ceiling fans and good-quality twin or double beds. Each en-suite bathroom has a deep bath and an outdoor shower, and the private deck is the perfect spot for a sundowner from the minibar.
Game drives offer the greatest scope for wildlife viewing, both during the day and at night, when the nocturnal species emerge. Bush walks allow an in-depth look at the environment. For something a little different, have a full day safari with a picnic or enjoy a bush dinner in the wilds. Take a guided walking safari or a helicopter flight (extra cost) for a unique perspective and, at the end of the day, pamper yourself with a massage.
Enjoy the magic of living under canvas, but without roughing it. The tents are super-stylish and have added, welcome extras like air-conditioning and heavenly outdoor showers.
Go with the flow. Camp staff are always looking for ways to surprise guests, so (without giving too much away!) candlelit bush sundowners and other treats could well be on the agenda...
The camp doesn't allow children under the age of 11 making it perfect for honeymooners and couples. For families with younger children, consider sister lodge, Ngala Safari Lodge.
