The Homestead is a private, sole-use safari residence that sleeps just eight, so it's perfect for a family or group of friends. Situated in the northern Phinda Private Game Reserve, the lodge blends into the surrounding wilderness and has been designed with an eye for space – the interior and exterior flow to create interactive guest areas. The atmosphere is laid-back, the villa is stylishly chic and fully serviced, and your private tracker will lead you to sightings of more animals and birds than you can imagine – including the Big Five, cheetah and the increasingly rare black rhino.
The lodge is beautifully laid out, with plenty of space for everyone to enjoy time together or on their own. The decor is discreet safari-chic, tranquil and comfortable. The central area contains the living room, kitchen and dining room (the chef has five-star skills!). There's also a charming outdoor boma dining area, a small pool for hot afternoons (also visited by thirsty elephants), plenty of comfortable seating and a small gym.
Covered walkways lead to two large and light bedroom suites (one with a library/TV room) at each end of the lodge. Inside, the beds face the large sliding windows, so you wake to the sight of the bush and its early risers. All have en-suite bathrooms and are decorated with retro safari trinkets, Zulu crafts and sleek, contemporary comfort.
That watering hole on your doorstep. Elephants wander up to drink from the pool, nyala graze on the lawn and you'll find yourself glued to the deck between drives — binoculars in one hand, coffee in the other.
If you're staying three nights or more, ask about the pangolin monitoring experience. You'll join a researcher tracking these rare and endangered mammals.
The homestead is exclusive-use, so you'll need to fill (or pay for) all four suites. Brilliant for a group of friends or a big family, but not ideal if it's just the two of you.
