El Bioma is centred around a courtyard peppered with palms and a cool swimming pool that provides a welcome respite after your walking or river explorations. The hotel also has an excellent restaurant that serves top-tier breakfasts of fresh juice and local coffee, fruit and traditional 'arepa de huevo', which comes highly recommended. A definite highlight is El Bioma's rooftop deck, where you can enjoy views over the town from the bubbling hot tub.
With white-washed walls and windows overlooking the courtyard, each room is fitted with a double bed (or larger) with orthopedic mattresses. They are simply but effectively decorated, and super spacious. The largest is the top-floor Deluxe Suite, which enjoys its own balcony, while the Mansard Suite is distinguished by its original wooden ceilings and has no neighbouring rooms. The hotel also has duplex rooms, which are suitable for four people. The bathrooms are neat with huge showers and all the rooms have aircon – it's vital in such a hot area.
Optimally located between the Plaza de la Libertad and Parque Bolivar, El Bioma is a fantastic base for exploring Mompox. The hotel will happily organise tours of all kinds and highlights include the Plaza de la Concepcion, Church of Santa Barbara, and Mompox's famous cemetery. This area is also renowned for its filigree jewellery and you can enjoy fascinating workshop tours and pick up a few pieces. You might also like to take in the natural beauty and birdlife on a boat trip down the Magdalena River.
A lazy town in the bends of the Magdalena River where time saunters rather than sprints.
