About Blue Train Pretoria to Cape Town

Journey in style on this 1920s luxury train through South Africa's heartland.
Steam-powered transport kicked off the epoch of personal travel, and that is how the original Blue Train chugged its way across the southern African subcontinent. Although diesel and electricity now power its engine, the train continues to trace its historic journey from South Africa's mineral-rich interiors to its Mother City, Cape Town. The 27-hour, 1600-kilometre trip is an exceptional way to travel – as a means to an end or an end in itself. Relish the chance to return to this bygone era of high teas, aperitifs and post-dinner cigars and port, while slicing through the country's diverse landscapes.

Property details

The property

The Club Car and Lounge Car are supremely comfortable settings for leisure time. The Club Car resembles a sophisticated gentlemen's club, with leather chairs, gleaming wood panels, bookshelves and fabulous views on three sides. The Lounge Car is a bright space, decorated with local artwork. Here you'll enjoy the refined ritual of high tea, or a post-dinner digestif. Meals are served in the dining car, with its elegant decor and candlelit evenings. And there's a boutique for those precious mementos.

The rooms

All suites on the Blue Train are clever spaces that transform from bedrooms to comfortable living rooms by day. The DeLuxe Coaches offer more compact luxury – each car has five suites with twin beds (one has a double bed and a small bathtub). All have air-conditioning, underfloor heating and an entertainment system. The larger Luxury Suites have double or twin beds, a bathroom with tub, a TV and entertainment system, Blu-ray movies and a phone to request in-suite service.

Activities

Transport of this calibre enables you to enjoy everyday pleasures in a way that feels far from modern life. From the moment you leave Pretoria Station until your arrival at Cape Town Station, a day and a half later, you'll be transported back to an era of slow travel – when one travelled for the journey alone. So settle back, refreshment in hand, and enjoy the experience as the ever-changing countryside and wide spaces slide past the window.
