About Blue Zebra Island Lodge

A sleepy, charming lodge on a wild island paradise in Lake Malawi National Park.
It takes a twenty-minute boat ride across the lake to get to this remote and beautiful island paradise. Forested Nankoma Island, part of Lake Malawi National Park, offers spacious and secluded tented chalets amongst the trees or on the beach. It will be hard to leave the infinity pool with its uninterrupted view over the lake, or the welcoming Fig Tree Bar but there’s an underwater oasis to explore, indigenous forests and unique wildlife to distract you.

Property details

The property

The main lodge areas are refined and simple. Enjoy meals in the central open-sided thatch restaurant. Look out for the resident bush baby - a dinner highlight! Enjoy two-course lunches and three-course dinners here. The pool area is expansive with plenty of seating. Sample a sundowner drink at the gazebo overlooking the water or at the friendly Fig Tree Bar. Scattered around the resort are a few shaded chill areas where you can curl up with a book or enjoy a board game.

The rooms

The lodge offers three different room types. Lake safari tents are en-suite tented chalets, more centrally located. Executive Chalets are secluded and more spacious, with balconies overlooking Lake Malawi. There are standard and family executive chalets. The largest is the superior family cottage, open planned with a lounge and dining area and two en-suite bedrooms (one queen, one double). 2 single beds can be added to the main room. It’s easy to become immersed in your environment at all three establishments.

Activities

If you’re lucky, you might witness fish eagles hunting, otters playing in the shallows or a monitor lizard scurrying past. For more wildlife sightings, explore the island on foot. A walk around would take about an hour or two. Enjoy snorkelling, wakeboarding and kayaking on the protected, crystal clear freshwater lake. Sundowners are best enjoyed on a boat cruise, and to get into the groove of island life, book a massage with the resident therapist.

Insiders Tip

It’s a short boat ride out to Nankoma Island from the shores, usually involving paddling through some shallow water so dress appropriately!
Something to think about

Something to think about

This is probably the least ‘luxurious’ lodge around the lake, but it’s fun, super easy to get to, and affordable – and we love it.
