Overlooking the thorn-thicketed and grassland valley in the western Madikwe Game Reserve, Buffalo Ridge is a pretty perch indeed. It is in fact the first wholly-owned, community-based lodge to be developed in South Africa and when you're back at base, there's a homely atmosphere that's hard to beat. More broadly, this region of northern South Africa represents an important transition zone between the Kalahari thronveld and lowveld bushveld and there's a wide variety of wildlife, including the Big Five, cheetah, hyena and wild dog, to be spotted. It's also only a four-hour drive from Johannesburg (or a fifty-minute flight) and completely malaria-free, making it a great choice for an easy jaunt into the bush.

There are eight smartly designed thatch-and-stone chalets, each nestled into the trees and positioned with views across the valley. Floors are wood and ceilings are high, with beds sitting in the centre in front of large sliding doors. Each has a small lounge and ensuite bathroom with shower and double basin. Decks wrap all around the rooms and have cushioned loungers for relaxing. Without trying too hard, the rooms exude an inviting rustic-elegance and are easy-going and decidedly comfortable.
The elevated thatched-roof and open-sided structures, Buffalo Ridge feels like a tree house to top all tree houses.
The lodge is owned by the Balete people, who live in the village of Lekgophung, just west of Madikwe. The story of how the partnership came about is fascinating so make sure to ask!
It gets chilly up here in 'winter' (May to August) - warm jackets are essential!
