About Buhoma Lodge

Waken to a choir of forest birds and the anticipation of mountain gorillas
An eco-friendly lodge in Uganda's impressive Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, home to the increasingly rare mountain gorilla and a host of other primates, birds, reptiles and vegetation. The location, just five minutes' walk from the park gate, is perfect for excursions into the forest. Don't be fooled by the lodge's rustic exterior, inside the atmosphere is intimate and comfortable, with all mod cons, solar power, gravity-fed water, top-notch food and well-furnished cottages. Experience at first hand the moods of the forest, from the muffled sounds on mist-shrouded mornings to the bright sunlit days when the views go on forever.

Property details

The property

Visitors gather in the elevated central area to eat, relax, share adventures and admire the views. The lounge has comfortable seating, invitingly squashy cushions and a stone-walled fireplace; great quality meals (usually a three-course combo of international and locally flavoured cuisine) are served in the dining area; the bar is well stocked and the veranda area has views that go on forever. Cameras can be charged in the main area.

The rooms

Raised wooden walkways link the main area to eight comfortable cottages showcasing local materials and enchanting decor. Each suite has a private veranda and enormous windows that seem to bring the forest indoors. Inside, all is spacious, with wooden floors, large comfortable beds, colourful accents, a charming en-suite bathroom with flushing toilet and hot shower (some rooms have tubs).

Activities

Some 340 gorillas live in the Bwindi forest, 116 of which are habituated and have been given names by the rangers. Among them are silverbacks, which can reach two metres in height! Birding is a treat, with some 350 recorded species, 14 of which occur nowhere else in Uganda. Look out for African green broadbill, Shelley’s crimsonwing, handsome francolin, black and cinnamon-chested bee-eaters, among other favourites. Visit the local village, hike the surroundings and enjoy a massage at the lodge.

Insiders Tip

All the rooms are lovely, but if you are able to climb stairs ask for one in the treetops. The view is amazing.
Something to think about

Something to think about

Overnight accommodation is required the night before trekking in order to start early the following morning and then a further night’s accommodation is recommended, as the trek can take a full day. It's worth the effort though – meeting a gorilla family is a superb experience.
