About Busanga Plains Camp

Superb game viewing and not a whiff of the madding crowd
In the heart of Kafue National Park is a wetland area so remote that few outsiders even know of its existence. This is the Busanga Plains, a place where wildlife is uninterrupted and safari is as it should be. Watch as lion and cheetah prey on wildebeest, roan and buffalo, lechwe and puku graze on the island-studded swamps, shy sitatunga hide in the papyrus reeds and crowned and wattled cranes, secretary birds and ground hornbill stalk the grasslands. Humans can visit between July and November, when Busanga Plains Camp's four superb safari tents are erected on an island. This is luxury, Karen Blixen-style.

Property details

The property

Busanga Plains Camp is surrounded by a lush and lovely floodplain. The main dining and bar area are set on a raised wooden deck and roofed with thatch and the whole structure faces east, making sunrise across the landscape an unforgettable experience. In the evenings, a fire is lit in the fireplace on the wooden deck – perfect for sundowners and storytelling. The food is excellent and the staff are professional.

The rooms

There are just four large, well-furnished safari tents (two twin and two double) with comfortable and cosy beds and en-suite open-air bathrooms overlooking the Busanga Plains. Each is perfectly private and has space outside for siesta snoozes and afternoon game-viewing. Limited power is available, with solar lights and paraffin lamps in the tents.

Activities

Go on productive twice-daily game drives – one at sunrise and the other in the late afternoon/early evening. Both are 3.5 to four hours long, and the rangers' knowledge of the area is inspiring. There's nothing like watching a lion make a kill to emphasise your distance from tarmac and taxis! For more intimate encounters, take a walking safari - these leave early in the morning to avoid the heat, and last for about three hours.

Kafue National Park

A magical landscape on an epic scale where cheetah and lion roam free, yet tourists rarely visit.
