About Calanoa Lodge

Find a deeper connection with the natural world at this ingenious lodge in the Amazon.
After arriving at Leticia, the meeting place of Colombia, Brazil and Peru, you'll spend the next few hours winding down the Amazon's waterways until you reach Calanoa Lodge. The brainchild of Marlene and Diego Samper, the lodge goes beyond simply being accommodation and functions as a space to discover how creativity and nature intertwine. You'll have the chance to experiment through a variety of mediums including music, photography and art. The lodge is also deeply involved in the community and advocates for sustainable tourism through many of the activities – local guides lead you on informative walks through the forest and you'll have the chance to visit a nearby school.

Property details

The property

A self-proclaimed experiment in natural and sustainable architecture, Calanoa is a collection of thatched structures tucked deep into the Amazonian forest. The communal areas are kept simple and open to their surroundings, and all meals are shared at one large table. Dishes include freshly-caught fish wrapped in banana leaves washed down with tropical cocktails. Walk a little way into the trees and you'll find a beautiful pavilion, the Jaguar's Eye, where you can listen to the sounds of the forest, meditate and practice yoga.

The rooms

The lodge has a total of seven cabins, all built from sustainably-sourced wood and topped with palms. The standard cabins have two levels, the Master cabin has three levels with an internal garden and spacious terrace, and the Tiger hut provides the full treehouse experience, perched at the height of the canopy. The Junior Suite borrows its design from the original steamboats that explored the Amazon, and the Mitu cabin reflects years of experimentation with architecture and opens directly onto the river. Each cabin has a netted canopy bed, hand-carved bathroom, and a hammock on the deck.

Activities

There's very little that you can't do at Calanoa Lodge, whether it's hiking into the forest by day or night to spy all manner of creatures – howler monkeys, sloths and incomparable birdlife – or learning about the medicinal uses of various plants, or boat trips along the waterways in search of pink river dolphins. You can also enjoy a unique 'Amazon Spa' experience, performed by traditional doctors with smoke, herbs and mud baths.
