Tucked into a camel thorn tree forest on the extreme south-eastern edge of Hwange National Park, Camelthorn Lodge is a ten minute drive to the park's gate, very near the game-rich region of Ngamo Plains. Hwange is a unique park whose successful game viewing is hugely dependent upon pumped water holes, which help concentrate its wildlife. Thus, the dry season (between April and November) is the most ideal time to visit. The sturdy lodge is solar powered and offers a comfortable base from which to explore this corner of Zimbabwe. Railway buffs and game-viewing enthusiasts alike will delight in the Elephant Express, a purpose-built rail car that runs between Hwange Town and the nearby Ngamo Siding. Other than Bomani Tented Camp, this lodge is the only other big 5 game viewing lodge in Hwange.

There are eight double-sleeping forest villas, each with a patio and a spiral staircase that leads to a shaded upper-deck game viewing area, furnished with a daybed - perfect for an afternoon nap. The structures are concrete and stone and feel more hotel-like than a bush camp. All the amenities are accounted for: an ensuite bathroom with shower and bath; a fireplace; plenty of light and a safe to secure your belongings. The surrounding woodlands ensure adequate privacy and the free-standing hammock is a lovely touch.
Camelthorn's cleverly built 'look-up hide' is just a kilometer away from camp and offers some of the best up-close game viewing and photography anywhere.
A ride on the Elephant Express is a novel addition to a safari lodge's activity menu and is a definite must.
The lodge works closely with local communities. If you take the opportunity to visit one of the programs, ensure you dress modestly and ask permission before taking any photographs.
