Set in the lush topography of its very own peninsula (it's private enough to feel that way), Cape Weligama is designed so every villa has a stellar view of the lapping coastline. As you might have guessed, the famous surfing beach is just a scenic stroll away and you can take full advantage of Sri Lanka's dreamy sunsets from the half-moon infinity pool. As the brainchild of celebrated architect, Lek Bunnag, the clifftop resort has an island charm with all the mod cons you could ask for. Take advantage of the Adventure Centre, which offers every water sport under the sun and in true Sri Lankan style, visit nearby a tea plantation.

The property

The first thing the sea spray touches is the 60m infinity pool, which seems to flow straight into the ocean. Enjoy the catch of the day at the Ocean Terrace, decorated in polished wooden columns and your go-to breakfast spot is the Kumbuk Cafe with plenty of Sri Lankan staples and cups of frothy yaara tea. You can also nibble on the resort's degustation menu at Lookout Blue, enjoy afternoon tea at the rose-coloured Cape Club and sip on handcrafted cocktails (with a game of pool) at the Surf Bar. For all your relaxation needs, frequent the spa or join in a yoga session at one of many clifftop locales.

The rooms

Knitted into the natural slopes at Weligama, the resort has 39 villas and suites topped with terracotta roofs. Built in the style of a traditional village, the villas come two or three to a garden with a roomy terrace and shared pool, and the suites are clustered around the Cove Pool. In earthy tones or shades of blue with simple decor, the villas have a king-size bed, spacious lounge and lovely a bathroom with a deep, oval tub. Some villas also come with a private pool, steam room or bar; other amenities include specialty Dilmah teas, Espresso machines and a pillow menu.

Activities

Before venturing out to enjoy the sights, get a 'tour' of Sri Lankan cuisine with the head chef - learn his favourite local recipes and why he loves curry leaves. Whether you're a complete novice or a pro, surfing is endemic to Weligama. Just down the beach, enjoy the water with a range of other activities including kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, snorkelling or a sunset cruise with canapes. Experience this corner of Sri Lanka from the air on a helicopter ride over the 'Cultural Triangle', arriving back on terra firma in time for tea.
