The hotel’s romantic atmosphere comes from the Spanish architecture and refined décor that features many of the original frescoes and reliefs. The common areas, including the bar and restaurant, are embellished by antiques and metal sculptures, as is the beautiful arcaded courtyard, the heart of the hotel and perfect for relaxing or al fresco dining. The fourth-floor terrace offers amazing views of Arequipa and the imposing Misti volcano in the distance. Although there’s no pool or gym, the spa offers a selection of treatments and is well worth a visit.

The hotel’s 40 rooms are all cosy and lovely. The standard rooms - a touch on the small side - feature simple décor with carpeted floors and King-size or twin beds as well as a small breakfast table. Junior suites definitely offer more space, but the larger senior and imperial suites take first prize with their original architecture and colonial décor. All rooms have beautiful artworks on the walls, hardwood floors, gilded mirrors, iron chandeliers and spacious bathrooms with separate showers and bathtubs.

There is no shortage of activities when visiting Arequipa: take a stroll to the Plaza de Armas (Main Square) and peek into the gorgeous Basilica Cathedral - if you’re going to visit just one of the many churches around, let it be this one! Check out the monastery of Santa Catalina for amazing history and art pieces or go on the “sillar” route to discover why Arequipa is known as “the White City”. But spare enough time to get a taste of the local cuisine at the picanterías too!
