Comprised of three white-washed buildings, the picture windows and breezy balconies make every space light-filled and welcoming. Surrounded by arches and plenty of potted greenery, the Alma Restaurant serves an array of Colombian-Caribbean favourites (be sure to try the chef's signature ceviche) in the main dining area or the courtyard. Subdued lighting and live salsa make the bar a superb place to enjoy a nightcap, whilst tea and coffee are served all day in the magnificent library. If you're in need of a pamper, head to the Aurum Spa for a massage or steam in the hammam.

Decorated in neutral tones and clean lines, every room features centuries-old beamed ceilings, heritage furnishings and four-poster iron beds draped in Frette linens. Works by celebrated Colombian artists add character to the bedrooms. A select number of rooms enjoy a private patio and hot tub in a walled garden, while the Suite Prestige is a duplex with two rooms and a living/dining area. The Suite del Virrey is the largest and has two terraces with sun loungers to make the most of your down time.

A walking tour of the original city, its plazas, churches and art galleries is a must. If you're a real history buff, head to the Museo del Oro Zenu to learn all about the Zenu people's impressive gold-smithing skills, explore the Palacio de la Inquisicion, and visit the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, which has an impeccable view over the city. Then, peruse the trendy Getsemani neighbourhood and at the day's end, make your way to the Cafe del Mar to catch the sunset over the Caribbean.
