Set in gardens filled with hummingbird feeders and flourishing greenery, Casa Terra's white-washed walls and wooden balustrades are exceedingly charming. There is no restaurant but breakfast is served on the patio as a fountain babbles nearby. Expect a feast of locally-sourced products including ham, cheese and eggs made to order, as well as fresh fruit and juices, all presented on pretty painted crockery. In the afternoons, take a break from your exploring to enjoy a cup of Colombian coffee with homemade biscuits.
Casa Terra has 10 rooms, all individually decorated with local sheepskins, fabrics, sculptures and paintings. All have Wifi access and a TV as well as a bathroom with a rainfall shower (one of the rooms also has a bathtub). Slightly larger than the standard rooms, many of the suites have their own balcony overlooking the picturesque gardens. The rooms are cosy and homely, and you'll notice the little touches like hot water bottles tucked between the sheets on chilly evenings.
As one of the most central properties in Villa de Leyva, you couldn't be in a better spot for a little exploring. When you arrive, make a beeline for the sprawling Plaza Mayor, which is lined with fantastic restaurants, museums and the Iglesia de Nuestra Senora del Rosario, a simple Baroque-style church from the 17th century – the gold-adorned altar is quite astonishing. Later on, head further afield to enjoy wine tasting in nearby vineyards, or hike in Igaque National Park.
