Having survived decades of turmoil and emerged on the other side, Gorongosa National Park is a champion for bringing wild spaces and species back from the brink. Part of this ongoing transformation is the development of a handful of properties, including the feather-light Chicari Camp. Built anew every season near a pan of the same name, Chicari is perfectly positioned to watch animals of every size and shape arrive for a drink at the water. The tents are canvas and classic with a superb view and the whole camp is wonderfully eco-conscious, which only makes you appreciate the hard-won setting even more.

Housed under yards of creamy canvas, the main camp is completely open-fronted, creating a breezy setting for meal times and relaxing in the laid-back lounge area – the perfect spot for getting stuck into a new book. At meal times, the tables are set with crisp, white linens, and hearty, locally-inspired food is served against the backdrop of wildlife at the pan and surrounding floodplains. As the night draws in, gather around the campfire for a spot of stargazing and storytelling.
Entirely solar-powered, there are eight Meru-style safari tents and one 'treehide' tent, perfectly suited for families or groups. Each one is well-equipped with a large double bed, an open closet, standing fan, and mossie nets on all the windows. The en-suite bathrooms are neat and polished with a flushing loo and pressurised shower. Outside, there’s a small veranda with a fabulous of view of the pan from two comfy chairs.
This sector of Gorongosa National Park is fantastic for game viewing and you can spot everything from lion and elephant to the park's famous wild dogs. Of course, game drives are a staple but walking safaris are also fantastic – and they start right from camp (when conditions allow). Following the rainy season, boating excursions on the Urema floodplain are a real treat, especially for birders and for guests staying five nights or more, either here or in combination with sister lodge, Muzimu, there’s the chance to join a pangolin foraging walk.
The entire camp is packed up at the end of every season, so you know it's well and truly light on the earth.
Allow yourself a little time to enjoy the camp fully, relaxing at your tent or the main area, and simply soaking up the fabulous surroundings.
The treehide tent is incredibly unique in its design, but it's worth noting that the two rooms share a deck so would be better suited to families or friends travelling together.

Enjoy game drives and explore the future of conservation in this off-the-radar safari destination.
