About Chichele Presidential Lodge

Historic presidential retreat in Zambia's South Luangwa National Park
Built in the 1970s as a personal retreat for former Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda and redefined in 2025, Chichele Lodge defines sophistication in the bush - especially after being completely rebuilt and reimagined. From its forested hilltop position, the lodge overlooks wildlife-rich floodplains and the Central South Luangwa Valley, a region well known for its game viewing and good network of tarred roads (this is the only section of national park that is open year-round). This elegant, well-established lodge feels more like a hotel than a bush camp, so it's perfect if your idea of a safari includes a desire for creature comforts and personal attention.

Property details

The property

An arched entrance leads to the refurbished manor house, a rambling structure with a free-flowing space that feels both rustic and grand. The interiors are vintage, elegant, and rich with white and cream walls and fabrics, and well-polished wood. The large lounge has plenty of seating and a fireplace, and flows to a bar (well stocked, of course), the dining room (expect fine cuisine), and a wide veranda where you'll find an infinity lap pool that reflects the sky.

The rooms

Ten spacious Victorian-style chalets overlook the valley, their interiors flooded with light that streams through large French windows opening onto private terraces, blue skies and those incredible views. The rooms provide an unusually high degree of luxuries for a relatively remote safari lodge. The finishings are sophisticated: crisp white linens, a four-poster bed (draped with mosquito netting) and dark, polished wood. You'll find en-suite bathrooms with a huge tub and outdoor shower, aircon and Wi-Fi

Activities

Although game drives are especially rewarding during the drier months, there's plenty to see year-round, especially as South Laungwa's habitat comprises rivers, floodplains, forests and grassland. Four of the Big Five live here (sadly no rhino)! Walking safaris are an excellent way to make the most of the region and the guides – Zambia is known for its rigorous guiding standards. Activities are scheduled twice a day, but a huge effort is made to personally accommodate guests' preferences. On night drives, look out for the iconic predators – lion, leopard, and civet among them, as well as honey badger, aardvark and wide-eyed bushbaby.

What you'll love

What you'll love

The lodge's hilltop position allows you to happily spend hours scanning the bush for birds and beasts. The lawns themselves may reveal a surprise or two – impala, puku, baboon, vervet monkey, warthogs, and even elephant occasionally pop in for a drink from the swimming pool.

If you'd like to enjoy a little R&R whilst here, visit the world-class spa for a massage or join a session at the yoga deck.
Something to think about

Something to think about

While the lodge luxuries may seem to require hefty resources, thanks to a carbon neutral conservation ethos the Cumings family's properties are known for, hot water and air-con is supplied by hydroelectric power.
